Canada's best beds, no guesswork
We do the check-in so you don't have to gamble on it. Honest, first-hand reviews of Canadian hotels and resorts — waterfront landmarks, grand city château, and a couple with a casino downstairs — written by people who actually stayed the night.
Fairmont Pacific Rim, Vancouver
Six stays worth planning a trip around
Coast to coast, these are the properties our writers booked, paid for and slept in this season — weighed on comfort, service, location and whether the welcome felt real. Tap any card for the full, unvarnished review.
A decade of checking in, so your trip starts on the right foot
TrueNorth Guide launched in 2015 from a kitchen table in Calgary, with a simple idea: cut the marketing gloss and tell travellers what a hotel is genuinely like to stay in. We're not a booking engine, and no hotel chain owns a share of us.
Our small team of correspondents pays their own way, keeps a low profile at check-in, and writes about what actually happens between the front door and the checkout desk — the brilliant, the frustrating and the surprising. We never publish prices, we never take money for kind words, and every review carries the name of the writer who slept there.
When a link on our site sends you off to book a room, we may earn a small commission from the hotel. That's what keeps the guide free to read — and it has never once bought a better score.
How we stay independent →
How every TrueNorth review gets made
The same four steps sit behind every rating you'll read here.
We book & pay
Rooms are reserved exactly like any guest's — no comps, no "media rate", no heads-up to the hotel that a reviewer is on the way.
We stay the night
Our writer lives in the room for at least a night, testing the bed, the shower, the walls, the Wi-Fi and how service holds up after dark.
We weigh the crowd
We read hundreds of recent guest reviews so a single great — or grim — night never skews the verdict.
We say it plainly
A signed, first-person review with a clear verdict: praise where it's earned, and honesty where it isn't.
Independent, on purpose
No pay-to-play
A hotel can't buy a rating, a ranking or a softer review. Scores are set on the merits, before a single commission is counted.
Real, signed writers
Every review carries the byline of the correspondent who actually stayed — you can meet all three on our writers page.
No prices, ever
Rates shift by the hour and mislead more than they help. We describe the experience and send you to the source to book.
Stays worth the journey
